Thaksin University Hosts Thailand–Japan Open Onsen Forum 2026

On 27 March 2026, Thaksin University hosted the Thailand–Japan Open Onsen Forum 2026: From Hot Springs to Social Innovation at Thaksin University, Phatthalung Campus, in collaboration with The University of Kitakyushu and Kyushu Environmental Evaluation Association (KEEA), Japan.
The forum was officially opened by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nathapong Chitniratna, President of Thaksin University, who delivered the opening address highlighting the importance of international collaboration in advancing sustainable development, innovation, and the utilization of natural resources such as hot springs for community benefit.
The event brought together the executive team of Thaksin University, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nathapong Chitniratna, President of TSU, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Samak Kaewsuksaeng, Vice President for Research and Innovation, along with university staff and representatives from Trang and Phatthalung provinces.

Participants also included representatives from Kyushu Environmental Evaluation Association, led by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Takayuki Shimaoka, as well as Prof. Dr. Hidenari Yasui from The University of Kitakyushu. Their contributions in environmental evaluation and onsen development further strengthened academic collaboration between Thailand and Japan.

A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Thaksin University and KEEA to strengthen academic cooperation and joint research on water quality and onsen development.
The forum also included the presentation of water quality certificates for hot springs and water sources in Trang and Phatthalung, along with an international symposium and plenary dialogue on the future of onsen development in Southern Thailand.
In addition, the establishment of the International Centre on Water Environment in Regional Development (ICWERD) marked a significant milestone in promoting research and innovation at the regional level.
The event reflected the strong commitment of Thaksin University, in partnership with Japanese institutions, to advancing sustainable regional innovation through science, research, and collaboration.
